CSK/SKA uses the traditional ranking system originally established by Master Funakoshi, the founder of modern day karate. All SKA students begin as unranked, and may advance through the various levels of white, brown and black belt. SKA does not award belts of other colours.
The ultimate rank achievable in this original ranking system created by Master Funakoshi is Godan (5th degree Black Belt). SKA students should not confuse or compare this original ranking system, maintained by SKA out of respect for Master Funakoshi, to various other groups that award different colour belts or higher ranks of Black Belt.
Below is the order of ranks given by SKA and their Japanese equivalent:
Yearly CSK/SKA dues are required for belt gradings and special events: $75 for new members or $100 per year for current white & brown belts. No contracts. Worldwide recognized ranks. No extra charge for gradings.
As a member of Canada Shotokan Karate/Shotokan Karate of America and the Lakeshore Dojo, you are entitled to participate in CSK/SKA special practices, seminars, and events at other Montreal area dojos and at affiliated dojos worldwide.
